Philip E. Ferguson, MD, FCAP

Pathologist | Anatomic & Clinical Pathology | Hematopathology | Immunohistochemistry

Dr. Philip E. Ferguson, MD, FCAP, is an experienced pathologist and President and Managing Partner of Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates. His career combines comprehensive training in anatomic and clinical pathology with specialized expertise in hematopathology, immunohistochemistry, and laboratory medicine. Dr. Ferguson earned his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, bringing an analytical and systems-oriented perspective to his medical training and approach to diagnostic pathology.

Following medical school, Dr. Ferguson began his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine in Dallas, Texas,  before pursuing a career in pathology. He subsequently completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), followed by advanced fellowship training in Hematopathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Ferguson's clinical interests include hematopathology, immunohistochemistry, and the practical application of laboratory technology to diagnostic medicine in low resource settings. His interest in immunohistochemistry extends beyond its diagnostic applications to the question of how essential pathology services can be made accessible in environments where sophisticated equipment and financial resources may be limited. He has a particular interest in developing practical, sustainable approaches to pathology that maintain diagnostic value while reducing barriers to implementation.

A significant component of Dr. Ferguson's professional life has been his longstanding commitment to global health and international pathology service. Since 2007, he has volunteered with his family at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya, serving as a volunteer pathologist and working alongside local laboratory personnel and healthcare professionals to strengthen diagnostic pathology services. His involvement has focused not only on providing diagnostic consultation but also on helping build sustainable local capabilities that can continue to serve patients between visiting pathologist rotations.  One of these areas is the development of immunohistochemistry using practical, manually performed, low-cost techniques. This experience reflects his broader philosophy that access to high-quality pathology should not be limited by geography or the availability of advanced laboratory infrastructure.

As President and Managing Partner of Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates, Dr. Ferguson provides both clinical and organizational leadership while remaining actively engaged in diagnostic pathology. His combination of engineering training, comprehensive pathology education, fellowship expertise in hematopathology, interest in immunohistochemistry, and nearly two decades of international volunteer service reflects a career dedicated to diagnostic excellence, innovation, and expanding access to quality pathology services.
